Abstract

Swimming is a sport that is good for the general health of children with autism, who are at greater risk of drowning due to decreased awareness of risk and attraction to water. The objective of the study was to explore the experience of students and swimming teachers of children with autism, involved in safer swimming classes. The methodology was qualitative research with an autistic student attending a swimming class in the safer swimming program. The instrument used was the aquacity test with 10 items of procedural content. Aquacity is related to the degree of
adaptation of a person to the water environment and their ability to self-sustain, master aquatic breathing, move around in the aquatic environment, have body awareness and low chances of drowning. The results showed that, after 12 weeks, the autistic child's aquacity level went from 4 (poor) to 7 (good). The guardian's perception was that his son improved his autonomy in the water environment and his awareness of the risk of drowning in aquatic environments. Both the student and the teacher and the person responsible for the student noticed an improvement in the student's aquacity and how this allowed the student to be more comfortable and autonomous in the water environment. It can be concluded that procedural content mixed with attitudinal and conceptual content was efficient in improving both the aquacity and the level of knowledge about preventing drowning of the student studied.
